Chandigarh: The Centre Thursday sought an additional two months from the Punjab and Haryana high court to decide on its directions regarding the Panjab University Senate resolution to raise the retirement age of PU teachers from 60 to 65 years.
When the matter came up before a division bench comprising Justice Ashwani Mishra and Justice Rohit Kapoor, additional Solicitor General of India Satya Pal Jain informed the court that the issue is under active consideration by the Govt of India but requires more time for a final decision.
Jain said consultations with all stakeholders are under way and filed an affidavit by Sanjay Kumar, under secretary, ministry of education, to this effect.
Jain told the bench that the Punjab govt has opposed the proposal to enhance the retirement age. He added that other stakeholders also need to be consulted, including on financial implications, and requested two months to enable the Centre to take a final call.
Accepting the request, the bench adjourned the hearing to Jan, directing the Centre to place its decision before the court by then.
