Bhubaneswar: The higher education department has sanctioned Rs 95.2 lakh to 198 degree colleges for carrying out self-defence training for girl students.

Around 35,000 students of govt and govt-aided colleges will be trained as per a training curriculum designed by the department. Every college has been asked to conduct eight days of self-defence training by March next year.

Officials said these training sessions are part of the Shaktishree initiative which was launched by the state govt to ensure safety of girl students, following the self-immolation case in a Balasore college in July.
